Tour: Oak Savannas: Fire, Woodpeckers, & Bison
Speaker: Kara Baldwin, Education & Community Engagement Coordinator at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve
Cedar Creek has some of the longest running prescribe fire experiments in the world. Come experience the oak savannas and learn about see how fire shapes this landscape. Discuss creatures that call oak savannas home like bison and red-headed woodpeckers.
Kara Baldwin graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Biology Education. After teaching in classrooms and non-formal learning centers, she completed a Master of Science in Science Education from Oregon State University and PhD in Biology from Illinois State University. Today, Kara is the Education and Community Engagement Coordinator at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, a biological field station operated by the University of Minnesota’s College of Biological Sciences. She enjoys working where STEM and education overlap.

Topic: Apple Tree Pruning
Speaker: Ken Schroepfer, Isanti County Master Gardener
Learn the best time of the year to prune and how to correctly prune your apple trees. Whether you are going to prune a young apple tree or an older tree, the basics are the same. Your goal is to maintain a healthy tree with good fruit.
Ken is a senior Master Gardener who has taught numerous classes on pruning trees and shrubs specializing in apple trees. At one time, he owned and maintained 48 apple trees on his property.

You see them blooming on roadsides in the fall, these beauties of blue, purple and gold. They are some of the most important plants for pollinators as the growing season comes to an end. Learn more about their value for pollinators, the different varieties, and how to grow them in your garden.
Rhonda is a freelance writer and author, her work has been published in the Star Tribune, Northern Gardener magazine, Mpls StPaul magazine and more. She is the author of Pollinator Friendly Gardening and her next book; Garden for Life: Strategies for Easier, Greener, More Joyful Gardening as We Age arrives Spring 2026. She and her husband divide their time between Minneapolis and New Orleans. Here she loves growing a bountiful and beautiful kitchen garden. In New Orleans she inherited two hurricane-damaged lemon trees and is on a learning journey about gardening in Zone 9.
